Generational curses: Who do they affect?

Are generational curses still operational in the world today, even in the lives of some who profess Christ? Definitely! Everyone who is under the Law (those who believe that their right-standing with God or their ability to enjoy His blessings depends what they do or don't do and not what Christ has done) is subject to generational curses and every other curse that is attached to disobedience to the Law. See God's word concerning this in Numbers 14:18 -

‘The Lord is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations.’

This is God's word according to the Old Covenant (the Law) and it will not return to Him void. He will punish every sin to the uttermost, even to the third and fourth generations. No wonder doctors say certain people are likely to have certain diseases because their parents or grandparents have/had it.

But believer in Christ, we are children of the New Covenant. With Christ as our offering and our Righteousness, our heavenly Father does not remember our sins (Hebrews 8 & 10), including the ones we inherited from our fathers! See the promise fulfilled for us in Christ in Hebrews 8.

"10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."
13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away."

Do you see the contrast? In the Old Covenant "He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations."

In Christ, under the New Covenant of Grace, God says of us "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."

If God does not remember our sins and will not punish us for them because they have been punished in the body of Christ, who are we to remember our sins and expect punishment?

Believers, we are not under Law (Old Covenant) but under Grace (New Covenant) where Christ has delivered us from the curse of the Law. Under Grace, believing in and completely dependent on Christ for our right-standing with God and salvation, whatever the Law says, it does not say to us, according to Romans 3:19-20:

"19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin."

The curse of the Law, including generational curses, is on those who are under Law and not under Grace. Galatians 3:10 tells us so-

"For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them.”

Works of the Law is anything one does or does not do in order to obtain right-standing with God or receive from Him. Those here reject God's freely-given blessings in Christ (Romans 8:32) and the right-standing that Christ died that we may have with God, as it is written in 2 Corinthians 5:21 "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."

Romans 3:20 shows us the futility of trying to abide by all things written in the book of the Law "20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin." All efforts at keeping the Law only reflect "Guilty! Condemned! Cursed!" Including generational curses.

Our loving Father saw how hopelessly cursed and "generationally" cursed we all were and made His Son to become a curse for us, because He loved us so. The generational and other curses that we were fated to bear Christ became for us, as it is written in Galatians 3:13 - "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith."

For most capital offenses covered by Jewish Law, stoning was the form of punishment, not crucifixion. Under the Mosaic Law, those who were hanged on a tree were cursed by God (Deut. 21:22-23) Jesus took the curse of the Law upon Himself to redeem us from the curse. His hanging on the tree (cross) for you and I instead of being stoned to death as was customary was no coincidence. It was to redeem us from every curse, including generational curses.

Believers, there is no curse, generational or otherwise, on we who are in Christ with Him as our Righteousness! Please run far away from any church or preacher that tells you things like "your great-grandfather's goat that killed his neighbour's chicken is the reason why you cannot conceive." They are preaching the Law which DID NOT come through Christ and which kills. In Christ, every curse is broken. Under Law is where the curse remains. In Christ, we are not under law but under grace!

Beloved of God, God loves you. 1 John 4:17 says "Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world."

This "day of judgment" is not the Judgment Day when the Books will be opened but any day when the Accuser, Satan (prosecutor at law in Hebrew) accuses you of the sins you and your fathers have committed and demands that God's righteous judgment fall on you! His accusations can also come from the pulpit! This is the only power that the devil has: using the Law which is righteous and by which none can be made righteous to condemn. For those who are not under Law but under Grace, he has been DISARMED by Christ. See Colossians 2:13-15.

With Christ as your righteousness, forsaking the useless ways that false preachers lead many on (such as telling you to fast and do other stuff to break curses and such that Christ already delivered us from), the accusations will fail and the devil will flee from you. If you are yet to see Jesus (our Salvation) as He is, they will only make things worse. Ask Him to show you the Way.

"As He is, so are we in this world." Here in this world. Right now. Today. Not when we get to heaven.

Is Christ sick? Is Christ barren? Is Christ fearful? Is Christ unrighteous? IS CHRIST SUBJECT TO GENERATIONAL CURSES? NEVER. And in Him, with Him as your righteousness, neither are/do you. As He is, so are we in this world.

By His grace, don't worry if you see any symptoms. Remember Galatians 3:5 "Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?—"

Keep hearing the word of faith (not the Law which kills) and you will experience God's Salvation and miracles. How to tell the difference:

The Law is wielded against believers by the Accuser through false preachers who use it to remind you of your sins, tell you that the rough patch you're in is because of some sin you or your grandfather committed and tell you that unless you do certain things that only they (false preachers) can prescribe (babalawo style,) God will not help you. Fear, worry and an endless cycle of sin is the norm here. You wonder if you will be caught up with Christ at His coming because you know you really don't have it all together!

Worse, these preachers preach a mixture of part-Law, part-Grace, neither hot nor cold. They depend on their works to save them and expect that Christ will see that they have "tried" and "do the rest." Not so. Christ says in Revelation 3 that He will vomit them out of His mouth!

The word of faith reminds you of God's Grace- undeserved, unmerited favour.  It reminds you of what Christ did to give you right-standing with God apart from your works. It reminds you that God FREELY blesses and protects you not because of what you do but what Christ has done. It reminds you that in Christ, there is no condemnation for you. You are comforted and confident in Him when you hear of the Rapture because you know that your being caught up with our Saviour is a finished work - part and parcel of your salvation on the day He called you to believe on Him! You look forward to the Rapture because you know being caught up to meet Christ depends on Christ and not on you. He is our Shepherd that leads us on the path of righteousness.

The sign that you are growing as a believer in Christ is realising with each passing day that you cannot even take a single breath without Him, much less earn a living, live right or stop yourself from sinning. The mature believer is the one who is totally dependent on Christ to save him. Like a sheep and Shepherd relationship. He said "...for without me you can do nothing."

The opposite is the case for man.

The Holy Spirit will Spirit will teach you all things.

Believe Right and you will Live Right
