Generational curses and the believer in Christ. Pretty long:)

Believers, have you ever given thought to the fact that most people first learn of "their" generational curse from some people standing behind pulpits or from "men of God?" You're just minding your own business and someone comes to tell you that you need to come and break some curse of your father's house, or else; you who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ! Beware of such places of worship. Teaching that generational or other curses can hold sway in the life of a believer is not of Christ. It contradicts Galatians 3:13 -

"Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith."

See God's word concerning the generational curse in Numbers 14:18 - ‘The Lord is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations.’

This is God's word according to the Old Covenant (the Law) and it will not return to Him void. He will punish every sin to the uttermost, even to the third and fourth generations. No wonder doctors say certain people are likely to have certain diseases because their parents or grandparents have/had it.

Satan didn't institute the curse. Satan himself is cursed. The curse is an outcome of breaking the Law of Moses. Satan is the accuser. "HaSatan" is literally "prosecutor at law" in Hebrew and like any legal prosecutor, in this court of the Law of Moses, he accuses sinners of wrongdoing in order to get a guilty verdict so judgment, including feeling the effects generational curse, lack, sickness and other earthly ills, can follow.

But believer, in Christ, we are children of the NEW COVENANT (see Hebrews 8 & 10). We are made righteous by Christ's obedience (Romans 5:19) and redeemed from the curse of the law by Him (Galatians 3:13). We are living in the day prophesied by Jeremiah in Jer. 31:27-34 where, because of Christ's sacrifice for us, our teeth no longer feel the effects of the sour grapes eaten by our fathers. See the word of the Lord concerning we who are of the New Covenant:

29 “In those days they will not say again,
‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
And the children’s teeth are set on edge.’
30 But everyone will die for his own iniquity; each man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth will be set on edge."

Also see the witness of the Holy Spirit to all believers because of the finished work of Christ (v.14) in Hebrews 10:

14 "And by His one perfect sacrifice He made us perfectly holy and complete for all time! 15 The Holy Spirit confirms this to us by this Scripture, for the Lord says,

16 “Afterwards, I will give them this covenant: I will embed my laws into their hearts and fasten My Word to their thoughts.”
17 And then He says,

“I will not ever again remember their sins and lawless deeds!”

18 So if our sins have been forgiven and forgotten, why would we ever need to offer another sacrifice for sin?"

Do you see the contrast? Under the Old Covenant "...He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations." Numbers 14:18. Here, God remembers the fathers' iniquity and will visit it on generations unborn.

In Christ, for we who are under the New Covenant of Grace, the Lord says in Hebrews 8:12- "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more." In Christ, God does not remember our sins. Only the unrighteous can receive His mercy. No more iniquity to visit. Our teeth are no longer set on edge because our fathers ate sour grapes.

Some people think that Satan just goes about 'dashing' anybody generational curse, lack, depression and sickness anyhow but Satan has to seek whom to devour. See 1 Peter 5:8-

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour."

Many of us think that "be sober, be vigilant" means "do your best to obey the law in order to remain righteous before God or else Satan will catch you," until you read the verse in its context with the next verse:

8 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world."

We resist Satan by being steadfast in faith. The law is not of faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Obeying the law to get right with God and escape Satan is being faithless, exactly where Satan wants everybody to be because the law condemns even the best of us. The letter kills. Fighting the good fight of faith is steadfastly believing that we are righteous by faith in Christ and not because we obeyed the law. See Romans 3:

26"...and He makes sinners right in His sight when they believe in Jesus.27 Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law. It is based on faith. 28 So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law."

Satan is the Accuser. God instituted the Law that brings the curse to those who cannot obey it all (no one can) to make us see our need for His salvation. No one can obey the law perfectly and "almost" doesn't count here. Perfect obedience is required from all who are trying to obey the law in order to be godly or inherit eternal life. Like any court in the world, the condemned go to prison but this Law court is the mind. It is the battleground for spiritual warfare. Satan's accusations come from behind many pulpits, accusing sinners of wrongdoing, pointing out guilt and pointing sinners to the law that condemns the best of us for godliness; never to Christ who saves from sins (Matt. 1:21) and in whom all who truly believe have been made righteous by His obedience.

Satan can't just 'dash' a person a curse anyhow anymore than a human prosecutor in a court of law can send a person to prison or condemn him to death. A prosecutor can only threaten the accused with heavy judgment and tries to make him accept a guilty plea before he faces the judge. But in this court of the Law of Moses that is the mind, a guilty plea, restitution, begging for forgiveness or promises to do better cannot reduce or remove the wages of sin. One has to be either 100% righteous to go free or not righteous at all and face the wrath of God. A death has to happen; a death that Christ died for all, sacrificing Himself for our sins. See Romans 5:9-

"And there is still much more to say of His unfailing love for us! For through the blood of Jesus we have heard the powerful declaration, “You are now righteous in My sight.” And because of the sacrifice of Jesus, you will never experience the wrath of God."

What Satan does is take people to this court of the Law of Moses and accuse them of sins and shortcomings through imaginations and thoughts that we bring into captivity to the obedience of Christ by which all who believe are made righteous. Satan accuses the flock of even things like "you only read one chapter of the bible today; you should have read three," in order to get a guilty verdict so that the curse of the law can follow. As if reading five chapters of the Bible everyday and trying to obey the law can earn anyone an acquittal before God the Righteous Judge. All have sinned. James 2:10 tells us:

“For whosoever shall keep the whole law yet stumble at one point, he is guilty of all.”

Thinking that the good things we do can get us an acquittal in this court of law is akin to a murderer expecting a judge to let him go because he saved the lives of many children in a fire. Receiving God’s gift of righteousness to us in Christ is the only Way to be acquitted in this court of law.

Believers in Christ have been made righteous by Christ's obedience and redeemed from the curse of the law by Him. Any pastor who is saying that a believer who has Christ as his righteousness is still under the generational curse or any curse is a mouthpiece of Satan the accuser.

Remember 2 Corinthians 10:4-5:

4 "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,"

We are victorious by "bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;" our righteousness in Him. Romans 5:19 says "By one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous."

The wages of sin is death, a death that Christ died to make us righteous and free indeed. All earthly ills are the beginnings of "the wages of sin" aka death. Remember Adam did not die physically immediately after his death sentence came into effect but God's word concerning him dying on the day he ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil - a picture of the law that many are trying to keep in order to be godly - stands true. A thousand years is like a day in God's sight. Adam was on earth afterwards but he never hit the 1,000-year mark. His spirit was dead though and his life was filled with stress and toiling. This is what is happening to many religious people in the church who are trying to be godly (be like God) by human effort like Adam and Eve did. Just like the tree, the letter kills.

Once a sinner stops seeking his own righteousness from obeying the law and seeks first the kingdom of God (righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit) and HIS righteousness- God's righteousness which is a gift to all who believe in Jesus Christ - everything we need is added unto him.

Satan's weapon is the law which he uses to accuse sinners; but all have sinned. All stand condemned by the law. Romans 3:20 says "For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands..." Nobody is righteous, no matter how much they try to obey the law, do good things or pay tithe in order to get right with God; Isaiah 64:6 calls these "good things" that many are doing to get right with God "a menstrual rag"-

"We are all like one who is unclean, all our so-called righteous acts are like a menstrual rag in Your sight."

Without 100% righteousness which no man can attain, everyone stands condemned in this court of the Law of Moses so Satan's accusations can stand and judgment will follow. But for God's abundance of Grace and His gift of righteousness to us in Christ, the curse of the law, including generational curses, was the lot of all mankind.

Because God the Righteous Judge loved us so, He gave His own Son to make us righteous and redeem from the curse of the law. Romans 5:19 tells us:

"By one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous."

Adam's sin made all mankind sinners. He passed the sinful nature which can only produce sins to his descendants. Everyone with this sinful nature (evidenced by trying to obey the law in order to be godly) is under the curse, including the generational curse. See Galatians 3:10-

"Those who depend on obeying the Law live under a curse. For the scripture says, “Whoever does not always obey everything that is written in the book of the Law is under God's curse!”"

Trying to obey the law in order to get right with God is THE evidence of having the sinful nature. Such who try do not believe that Christ's obedience is enough to make them righteous and think they still have to obey the law to get right with God or get His blessings. Such reject Christ.

Christ has rid all believers of this sinful nature, making us 100% righteous with His gift of righteousness and thus has disarmed Satan of his weapon (law) that he uses to accuse in order for the judgment of the law to be passed on the sinner. See this Colossians 2:

11 "When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature. 12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with Him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for He forgave all our sins. 14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 In this way, He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross."

The law condemns everyone under it, even the best of us. For everyone who believes the Colossians verse: "you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with Him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead," Satan has been DISARMED of the weapon (law) that he uses to accuse; we are no longer under law but under Grace. Understand the essence of Christ's death and resurrection for our sake. See this in Romans 4:25-

"Who was delivered up because of our offences, and was raised up because of our being declared righteous."

The TPT puts it this way: "Jesus was handed over to be crucified for the forgiveness of our sins and was raised back to life to prove that He had made us right with God!"

Christ's resurrection is the divine evidence that we have been made righteous forever and apart from works. The law condemns those who try to be godly by keeping it; such have rejected Christ as their righteousness and so go to prison after Satan accuses them. The righteous (by faith in Christ, relying on God's gift of righteousness to us in Christ) go free. Only the righteousness that proceeds from the obedience of Christ will suffice for God the Righteous Judge who will punish every sin to the uttermost.

There is no condemnation for the believer in Christ. Satan's fiery darts and tongues of accusation based on mankind's inability to obey the law perfectly cannot prosper in the lives of those who have Christ as their righteousness. Our righteousness is from the Judge Himself! Remember Isaiah 54:17-

"No weapon formed against you shall prosper,
And every tongue which rises against you in judgment
You shall condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD,
And their righteousness is from Me,”
Says the LORD."

See the NLV: "No tool that is made to fight against you will do well. And you will prove wrong every tongue that says you are guilty. This is the gift given to the servants of the Lord. I take away their guilt and make them right,” says the Lord."

This removal of guilt is a gift, not earned. It is for those who by Grace, have come to realise the futility of all their striving to get right with God by human effort at obeying the law; not those who are so puffed up with pride that they think that they can obey and are "good" and point out other people's sins to condemn. Such do not realise that the reason why we are not committing particular sins is because we have not been tempted beyond what we can bear in those areas. But God sees how favourable circumstances can make some people think that some sins are beneath them.

Notice that this blessing in Isaiah 54:17 is not earned by fasting and prayer or any work. It is an inheritance (heritage) for those whose righteousness is from the Lord, not their efforts at obeying the law or doing good things to be accepted by Him. We are accepted in the Beloved- Jesus Christ- and not our puny efforts at obeying the law. Believe it. Confess it and see it!

The law condemns the best of us. Grace saves the worst of us. The law is not of faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

The word of faith speaks of God's Grace- undeserved, unmerited favour. It speaks of what Christ did to give you right-standing with God apart from your works and how no generational or other curse can hold away in your life because of His finished work of redeeming us from the curse of the law. It says that God FREELY blesses and protects you, not because of what you do but what Christ has done (Romans 8:32.) It reminds you that in Christ who came to "save His people from their sins" (Matt.1:21,) there is no condemnation for you and by His power, you get to live in triumph over sin and death (Romans 5:17.) You are comforted and confident in Him when you hear preaching on the Rapture because you know that your being caught up with our Saviour is a finished work - part and parcel of your salvation on the day He called you to believe on Him! You look forward to it.

Let Christ love you into wholeness today. Tell Him you don't even know what to do or where to start and the Holy Spirit will teach you all things.

Believe Right and you will Live Right
