Condemnation kills. Christ saves from sin and death.

Believer, sin is a darkness. There is no point in constantly telling a sinner how bad it is to live in darkness or how terrible the darkness is or how the darkness will cause him to stumble and hurt himself or how he will go to hell because he is living in darkness and then telling him to fix himself. Just bring in the Light and the darkness will disappear. Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. Unveil His love to the sinner and sins will disappear. 1 John 1:7 says:

"But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin."

The woman that was caught in adultery (John 8 is an example of someone who remained in Jesus Christ the Light of the world when the Law condemned her for her sins as it does ALL who try to keep it in order to be godly or earn God's GIFT of eternal life. The letter kills. She deserved to die according to the Law but Christ saved her from condemnation that kills. It is His "neither do I condemn you" that makes us "go and sin no more." Many churchgoers have this backwards- many think that Christ is saying "Go and sin no more then I will not condemn you." But believer, why would God the Righteous Judge condemn a person that has so sins? His gift of "no condemnation" in Christ is only for sinners.

What Christ said immediately after saving the adulterous woman is no coincidence. See this in John 8:11-12, right after the woman answered that no one condemned her:

7 "So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” 8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” 13 The Pharisees therefore said to Him, “You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not true.”"

We often forget that the Pharisees were not people who just couldn't wait for Jesus to finish talking so that they could go and fornicate or cheat somebody. They took pride in their ability to keep the Law. But the Law condemns and brings a curse on the best of those who try to keep it (Galatians 3:10.) Trying to keep the Law in order to be godly is walking in darkness.

Jesus Christ the Light of the world and our Salvation, was right there within the reach of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees who brought the woman to Him. His words - “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first” - caused them to see that they were just as guilty and in darkness as the sinner woman that they were accusing.

The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees thought they were "better" than the woman but in truth, they were just as guilty in spite of their law-keeping and "holy, holy" attitude; no difference between their situation and that of people today who think that their law-keeping and good works put them in a better position with God than "core" sinners:) Romans 5:9 says of our Lord God:

"And there is still much more to say of His unfailing love for us! For through the blood of Jesus we have heard the powerful declaration, “You are now righteous in My sight.” And because of the sacrifice of Jesus, you will never experience the wrath of God."

To depend on your own human effort at attaining even a tiny bit of righteousness/godliness (be like God) is to reject God's gift of everlasting righteousness to us in Christ - like the Pharisees who could not bear to remain in the Light even when their sins were exposed and they could not cast the first stone. They slunk back to their darkness of dependence on the arm of flesh (human effort) that will fail in their bid to be godly (be like God.) Their doctrine is what many "pastors" are preaching today. It is the same strategy that Satan used on Eve in the garden of Eden when he told her she would be godly (be like God) if she did something by human effort.

Believer, only the righteousness that proceeds from the obedience of Christ suffices for God the Righteous. Isaiah 64:6 describes these righteous deeds that are done by human effort as "a menstrual rag" in God's sight -

"We are all like one who is unclean, all our so-called righteous acts are like a menstrual rag in Your sight."

Without God's gift of righteousness to us in Christ, we would all be in darkness, no matter how much we try to keep the Law or do good things.

And Christ does not just leave us to continue to wallow in sins after we believe Him. Matthew 1:21 says of Him:

"She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Titus 2:14 says of Him: "He gave His life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us His very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds."

Believer, this is the Good News. By God's grace, don't let anyone trick you into believing that your puny human effort (arm of flesh) at trying to get right with God by keeping the law is involved in your salvation. This is the way to get cut off from Christ and fall from grace-

"For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God's grace." Galatians 5:4.

Christ does it all. The arm of flesh (human effort) will fail. Preaching moral codes without pointing the struggling sinner to Christ who saves from sins will only lead to condemnation. Condemnation never saved anybody. As it is in any court of law, the condemned get sentenced, and the wages of of sin is death. A death that Christ died for all.

A lot of things are not right within and outside the church today but as it was with the woman that was caught in adultery, no sick person (sinner) ever got better from constantly receiving doses of criticism and bashing for their illness. The sick need the Great Physician, not self-medication by we who have no medicine to save ourselves. Pointing out a broken leg (sins) and accusing its owner (sinner) of his inability to walk cannot help a person to walk. The sinner/churchgoer living in sins (this is due to wrong beliefs about Christ) needs to hear about Christ as Saviour from sins and not how terrible his sins are and their consequences or how demons will attack him or how he will perish in hell if he does not stop sinning.

Many sinners are struggling to stop sinning but sin is a prison that holds the sinner captive. The sinner needs a Saviour and not the additional burden of more moral codes (the Law) that are already crushing him and which many "pastors" are dishing out. Try to keep the Law in order to be godly and sin will strengthen its grip:

"For sin shall not have dominion over you for you are not under law but under Grace." Romans 6:14.

But many have this verse backwards. This kind of "keep the Law in order to be godly" preaching is one of the reasons why the world views Christians as a bigoted, intolerant and hypocritical lot. Just imagine what would have happened if Christ had yelled his disgust at the woman that was caught in adultery, threatened her with death or lectured her on the pitfalls of her sins. She would still have died. No amount of lectures, restitution, begging for forgiveness, backlog of good works and tithes paid or promises to "not do it again" could have saved her from the righteous demand of the Law aka Death. But this is what is going on in many places of worship - yelling disgust at the world that God so loved and threatening the same people that Christ gave Himself to free from sins with punishment and death. Meanwhile, like the Pharisees, these same people who accuse churchgoers of sins and tell them to expect punishment and death in the presence of Christ are just as guilty and cannot cast the first stone.

Believer, Christ is the Great Physician and the Medicine that saves the sick (sinner) from the clutches of sin and death. Take the Medicine and sickness (sins) will disappear. Preachers, unveil Jesus Christ the Light of the world to the sinner and their darkness of sins will fade away.

By Grace, let's keep on looking to Jesus the same way the Israelites that were bitten by snakes looked to the bronze serpent on the pole - trusting, depending and relying wholly on Christ as our salvation from sin and death (all earthly ills are symptoms of death.) The Israelites only had to look expectantly at the bronze snake on the pole in order to live. God's word says this is how to will live in triumph over sin and death: Romans 5:16-17:

"And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and His gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one Man, Jesus Christ."

Right believing always produces right living.
